This memorial scholarship was established by family, friends, and members of the IH community in memory of past IH resident Jarrah Young who passed away in 2012. Jarrah lived at International House in 2003 and 2004. During this time she had a profound impact on peoples’ lives and made some of her best friends. In 2003 she was heavily involved in college activities, receiving a Half Blue Award for Sport, an International House Achievement Award for Cross-Cultural Activities and was recognised for her significant contribution to Soirée.

In 2004 she took on a greater leadership role as she juggled the roles of A Tower Senior Resident, ICC Vice President and O-Week Convenor with her dear friend Bri Leo. Jarrah gave her all to her community and friendships at her new home. Tragically, Jarrah died on February 8, 2012, at the age of 26, when her safari tour bus overturned while travelling through Namibia. So as to never forget the contribution Jarrah made to International House, this scholarship honours her wonderful acceptance of people and cultures.


The scholarship will have a maximum value of $1, 250, which will be paid as a reduction in International House college fees.


To be eligible applicants must:

  • be a current resident of International House
  • be returning to IH in the year of Award
  • not be in previous receipt of the scholarship
  • remain enrolled in a full-time study load for Semester 1 and Semester 2

Selection criteria

Applicants are reviewed on:

  • compassion towards others
  • encouragement of others to participate in IH social, sporting and cultural activities
  • involvement in college life through participation in a range of IH social, sporting, cultural and/or cross-cultural activities
  • academic merit with a GPA of 4.5 or above

How to apply

Applicants should

  • submit a personal statement (one A4 page maximum) outlining: how you demonstrate compassion towards others and encouragement of others.
  • provide details of your level of involvement in IH activities (attach maximum of 2 supporting documents such as letter of reference, certificate of participation etc.)
  • provide evidence of academic achievement of most recent GPA
