Since 2012, International House residents have been hosting the annual Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC) in celebration of NAIDOC Week.
The Indigenous Youth Leadership Camp (IYLC) is an exciting initiative. The program empowers 15-17 year old Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander High School students to aspire to be a part of increasing the numbers of Indigenous students in higher education.
Mentors (International House residents) and Mentees (camp attendees) engage in a variety of personal and professional development activities at The University of Queensland (UQ) and around Brisbane. The aim is to increase their interest in higher education and encourage them to seek further learning at the end of Year 12. Mentees are provided with the opportunity to build their leadership skills, acquaint themselves with residential college and university lifestyle, improve their teamwork skills, public speaking abilities and establish strong friendships.
This initiative could not be successful without the support of community organisations like;
• Compass Group
• Rotary International
• Red Frogs &
• The University of Queensland.
International House also acknowledges the hard work put into IYLC from all of the volunteers who give their time to ensure the long-term success of the program.
Camp applications will open again in 2017
